How to choose a moisture-resistant HEPA filter? What parameters need to be confirmed in a high-humidity environment?

2026-09-28

What Problems Can High Humidity Cause for HEPA Filters?

As relative humidity increases, the filter media may absorb moisture. If the air temperature falls below the dew point, condensation may form, increasing pressure drop, reducing airflow, and potentially affecting the structural stability of the filter element.

Common risks include:

  • Increased pressure drop after the filter paper absorbs moisture;

  • Deformation of adhesive beads or separator materials;

  • Corrosion of galvanized frames and metal components;

  • Aging, loosening, or detachment of sealants and gaskets;

  • Microbial growth in continuously damp environments;

  • Failure to maintain system airflow and room pressure differentials.

Therefore, “suitable for high-humidity operation” does not mean that the filter can be washed directly with water or that its performance will remain completely unchanged after moisture exposure.

How Should Moisture-Resistant HEPA Media Be Selected?

Glass-Fiber Filter Media

Glass fiber is commonly used in HEPA filters. Its stability in humid environments can be improved through water-resistant treatment. It offers high filtration efficiency and mature, widely proven performance.

During procurement, buyers should confirm the media’s continuous and peak humidity resistance rather than considering only the filtration class.

PTFE Filter Media

PTFE media provides good hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, and low outgassing. It is suitable for high-humidity environments, corrosive gases, and applications with strict cleanliness requirements. However, its purchase cost is generally higher, and additional protection may be required during transportation and installation.

The presence of acidic or alkaline gases, salt spray, oil mist, or chemical solvents must also be considered. Moisture resistance does not necessarily mean corrosion resistance, so material compatibility should be verified according to the specific contaminants.

What Key Parameters Should Be Confirmed for High-Humidity Applications?

1. Humidity Conditions

The supplier should be informed of the normal operating relative humidity, peak humidity, duration, and whether condensation, water mist, or droplets may occur within the system.

For products marked as resistant to 100% RH, confirm whether this refers to a short-term test condition or permissible continuous operation.

2. Filtration Efficiency

Select H13, H14, or another required class according to the project specification. Confirm whether the filter is tested according to EN 1822, ISO 29463, or another specified standard.

For high-humidity applications, buyers should also ask whether moisture exposure causes a significant change in efficiency or pressure drop.

3. Rated Airflow and Pressure Drop

The filter’s initial pressure drop must be verified at the actual design airflow. Excessive airflow increases face velocity and pressure drop, which may rise further if the media becomes damp.

Fan selection should include sufficient pressure allowance for dust accumulation and humidity-related resistance changes.

4. Frame and Separator Materials

Galvanized steel or aluminum frames may be used in ordinary dry environments. Aluminum alloy, stainless steel, or corrosion-resistant plastic frames are more suitable for high-humidity, salt-spray, or corrosive environments.

For separator-type HEPA filters, the humidity and corrosion resistance of the separators must also be confirmed.

5. Sealant and Sealing Method

The potting sealant should provide resistance to moisture, temperature changes, and aging. Moisture-resistant materials such as EPDM may be selected for gaskets.

Gel-seal structures can be used in cleanrooms with strict sealing-integrity requirements. However, compatibility between the gel and the operating temperature, disinfectants, and installation environment must be verified.

How Can Moisture-Related Risks Be Reduced in Engineering Applications?

A moisture-resistant HEPA filter cannot replace proper HVAC dehumidification and drainage design. The system should prevent water carryover from cooling coils, provide reliable condensate drainage, and avoid installing HEPA filters where they may be directly exposed to water droplets.

Primary and medium-efficiency pre-filters are recommended in high-humidity environments to reduce HEPA blockage caused by mixtures of dust and moisture.

During operation, monitor the differential pressure across the filter, supply airflow, and room pressure. If the pressure drop rises abnormally within a short period, inspect the system for condensation, airflow abnormalities, and pre-filter blockage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a moisture-resistant HEPA filter be washed with water?
Generally, no. Moisture resistance means that the filter can withstand specified humidity conditions; it does not mean that the filter paper can be repeatedly washed.

Does high humidity reduce filtration efficiency?
The effect depends on the media, moisture level, and exposure duration. Even if efficiency does not decrease significantly, pressure drop may rise. Both efficiency and resistance should therefore be monitored.

Can a damp HEPA filter continue to be used?
The cause of condensation should first be eliminated, followed by inspection of the pressure drop, structure, and integrity. If the media is deformed, the seal has failed, or the leak test is unsuccessful, the filter should be replaced promptly.
